Chap. 3: Tears of an Angel

Chapter 3:

Heart racing, skin perspiring, leg shaking, and hands trembling, Drake sat in the hospital's waiting area in fear. His wife had been rushed to the emergency room, his newborn son to the NICU. Nicki had stopped breathing only minutes after giving birth to her first child. Drake blamed himself for not being able to get her to the hospital before her contractions began. He felt he was at fault for everything that was happening. He worried about his son's well-being. Was his child okay? Did he suffer any birth defects because of an amateur delivery? How developed was he being that he was born a month early? Drake didn't know the answer to any of these questions floating around in his head and that ate at him. He needed to know how his wife and child were pulling through. Before he reached the hospital, he called both their families to let them know Nicki had given birth and she was in the hospital. He didn't delve into too much detail, but told them to make their way over right away. Mrs. Carol was the first to know. She immediately packed her bags for a few weeks stay and headed for the airport with Micaiah, Robert, and Jelani close behind. The Maraj's wouldn't know the seriousness of the situation until they arrived in Toronto. And after Drake called Sandi, she called Dennis. Both his parents quickly made their way. About an hour passed as Drake sat alone in the waiting area. He was then approached by a nurse in mint green scrubs.

"Mister… Graham?" She asked, looking from her clipboard to him.

Eyes red, Drake lifted his head from his hands. He made eye contact and waited for the woman to speak first. His stomach was slowly knotting.

"Sir, baby Graham has been transported to the nursery." She flipped through the child's chart until she found the page she wanted. "He's only… 5lbs and 2oz. but with our policy, newborns are able to be discharged at 4lbs 8oz. and since he's not suffering from any complications most preemies would have at this stage, you'll get to take him home today. He's a healthy boy."

"Oh thank God." Drake felt a weight lift off his shoulders. "When can I see him?"

"Now. If you want."

"And what about my wife? Is she okay?"

The nurse looked back down at her clipboard. She seemed afraid to answer. "Your wife…"

"How's my wife?" Drake asked again, this time more stern.

The nurse swallowed the knot in her throat before looking at him. She couldn't seem to find Nicki's chart. "Sir, I don't know. I'm sorry."

Drake mugged her as he stood. "You don't know?"

"I'm so sorry. If you just wait here I'll go—"

He brushed past her before letting her finish her statement. He sped to the nurse's station in need of Nicki's room number. Once he received it, he then made his way to the elevators. Impatient, Drake decided to take the stairs instead. He ran up four flights, taking two or three steps at a time. His heart was nearly beating out of his chest. He didn't know what to expect. Was she breathing on her own? With a respirator? Or was she even breathing at all? Once Drake reached her room, he quickly threw open the door only to find it empty. He stared down at the damp slip of crumpled paper he held in his hand. The smeared, blue ink matched the numbers on the outside of the door. Drake didn't understand. Where was Nicki? He walked into the room and sat on the edge of the neatly made hospital bed. Next to him lay a chart. He curiously picked it up, looking it over. Nicki's full name addressed the top of every page. Thinking the worst, tears began to sting his eyes as his throat tightened. Drake squeezed the clipboard in his hands, shutting his eyes.

"Aubrey?"

Drake whipped his head around at the sound of his name. In the doorway sat Nicki in a wheelchair, a nurse steering her into the room.

"Onika??" He dropped the clipboard and immediately went over to her. Drake collapsed to his knees and wrapped his arms around her waist.

Nicki held his head to her chest. "It's okay baby. I'm okay. I'm here." She cried. She kissed the top of his head as his face rested against her bosom. "I'm here baby."

The nurse who wheeled her into the room quietly made an exit after picking Nicki's chart up from the floor. She shut the door behind her as the couple reunited.

"You scared me, Onika. I thought I lost you." Drake lifted his head to look her in the eyes. He could tell by the bags under them that she was still very tired. "I thought I lost you."

Nicki placed her hands against his face, wiping his tears away with her thumbs. "Everything's okay now." She sniffled. "I'm not going anywhere." She pecked his lips then hugged him around the neck, laying her head upon his shoulder. Drake hugged her around the waist as he rested his head on her shoulder. They held each other in silence, only listening to the other breathe.

Moments later Nicki spoke up. "I wanna see our son, Aubrey."

Drake pulled back to look at her. "You haven't seen him yet?"

"No." She shook her head, tearing up again. "They were running tests and I was waiting for you." She sniffled. "I wanna see my baby."

Drake rose to his feet. "Alright." He walked around the wheelchair, opened the door, and carefully wheeled her out of the room. He told her he'd called their families and that they were on their way. When the two reached the nursery, Nicki stared through the large glass window at all the pampered newborns. It didn't even take her twenty seconds to spot her son.

Nicki placed her palm on the cold glass as she watched him wiggle about. "Aubrey look." She tapped on the window with her index finger. "That's him. The small one."

Drake bent down and followed her gaze. He smiled once he saw him kicking his little legs. "…wow…"

One of the RN's saw them looking through the window so she stepped out to aid them. "Hi. I'm Rebecca." She smiled brightly. "Do you two have a little one in there?" She asked, tucking her blonde hair behind her ear.

"Yes." Nicki smiled. "Our son." She looked at Drake, reaching up to caress the side of his face.

Drake grinned at her then looked back at the nurse. "Can we see him?"

"Of course. Come right on in." Rebecca held the door open as Drake wheeled Nicki in. "I'm just gonna ask that you wash your hands at this station right here." She tapped on the metal sink.

"Alright." Drake washed and dried his hands then the nurse wheeled Nicki over to the newborn with him not far behind.

Nicki's eyes lit up when she heard him gurgle. She gasped, "Ohhh, my God. Let me hold him." She never took her eyes off of him.

"Go ahead, pick him up. Support his head and neck with one hand, body with the other. Dad can help."

Nicki wasted no time. She reached for him with both hands. Drake helped her lift his small body. "Careful, babe."

"I got it." Nicki slowly brought the infant to her chest. He squirmed a little until he was comfortably cradled in his mommy's arms. "Hi baby." Nicki softly spoke to him, looking into his eyes. "Oh my God, his eyes are so big." Nicki looked up at Drake with a smile.

"And blue?" Drake asked puzzled.

"Oh my God, yes! Aren't they beautiful?" Nicki asked, stroking her son's cheek.

"All the nurses are calling him the heartbreaker." Rebecca giggled. "Hopefully he keeps that hue. But with some infants their eyes change color the first six months."

"Oh wow, I didn't know that." Nicki looked back at her baby boy.

Drake knelt down, staring at his son's small body. "Can't believe he's really here." He lifted his hand and ran his thumb over the newborn's soft, curly hair. Drake heard Nicki whimper so he looked up. "You okay baby?"

She nodded her head 'yes' as she pressed her lips together. Tears quickly streamed down her face. "I'm fine. I'm jus… I'm happy." She drew in a breath. "Our son is really here and I'm happy. I'm jus happy." She cried. "Jus look at'm. He's so innocent, Aubrey. He's beautiful." Nicki wiped her eyes. "I jus wanna give'm the world."

Drake smiled. "So do I, Nic. You know… we still haven't named him yet. What did you have in mind?"

Nicki looked over their son for a few moments. "I was thinking something with meaning. A name of honor… greatness… and bravery."

"Bruce?"

"Ew." Nicki giggled. "No. Not Bruce. I want a name that I hold dear to me. I was thinking of naming him after someone courageous. Somebody that's not afraid to take on a challenge no matter how difficult or unfamiliar."

"Like Martin Luther King?"

"Aubrey?"

"Yea… I guess this isn't my thing."

"No… Aubrey. I'm naming him Aubrey. Aubrey Drake Graham. He's the most courageous person I know."

Drake looked Nicki in her eyes as his skin sprouted goose bumps. "Seriously?"

"Yea."

"I don't know what to say…"

"You don't have to say anything."

They both looked back down at their son.

"Hey… Aubrey." Drake said to their child. The baby boy twisted his mouth in a way that resembled a smile.

"Oh my God. Babe, did you see that?" Nicki asked.

"Yea, he smiled."

"No, the dimple. Say it again."

"Aubrey? Hey man."

The baby boy raised the corners of his mouth revealing a depression in his cheek.

"Wow, haha. I see it."

"Now whose dimples do those remind you of?" Nicki asked, knowingly.

"Oh I don't know. There's this beautiful woman I'm in love with who has dimples just like that… but it can't be her."

Nicki giggled. "You're not funny."

"But you're laughing."

Nicki giggled harder. Liddle Aubrey then started to get fussy. "Oh, I'm sorry." She looked down at the baby. "Mommy's sorry sweetheart." The baby started to cry. "No, no. Don't cry." He kept on. "Drake what do I do?"

"Uhh, rock him?"

"I am. He won't stop… Ssshhh."

Rebecca made her way back over to the new parents. "Aww, you three look picture perfect."

Nicki looked up at her. "He won't stop crying. What do I do?"

"Oh, he's just a little fussy. He may be hungry. You wanna try nursing him?"

"Uhh, sure. Can I do it in my room though? I don't really wanna be all in the open like this."

"Yea, no problem. Let me just sign this little guy out." She smiled. Rebecca then took down the numbers on Liddle Aubrey and Nicki's hospital bands. "Alright, you can go ahead. I'll meet you in your room to show you what to do in about five minutes."

Once Nicki reached her room, Drake carefully helped her into the bed. She never let go of baby Aubrey. When she and her son were comfortable, Drake took a seat in the wheelchair then they all waited for Rebecca. She walked in with a clipboard and folder full of important documents.

"I'm back." She smiled. "Before we start, I need you to sign a few papers for me. Have you picked out a name?"

"Yes. I named him Aubrey, after his dad."

"Aww, isn't that just the sweetest thing. You must feel pretty special, huh?" She asked Drake.

He chuckled with a polite nod.

"Don't feed his ego, Rebecca. He ain't awllat." Nicki rolled her eyes.

Both ladies laughed while Drake just shook his head. After they signed the documents and birth certificate, Rebecca placed them back in the folder and sat them on a chair nearby.

"Alright, ready mom?"

"Um… yea. I think I am." Nicki forced out a small, dry chuckle.

"Ohhh, don't be nervous. You'll get the hang of it. I promise." Rebecca said to her.

"You have kids?" Drake asked.

"Yes." Rebecca replied. "Two boys. They'll be three this year." She smiled.

"Oh, wow. Twins. How hard is that?" Nicki asked curiously.

"Eh, they can be a handful at times, but I love them to death. I wouldn't trade being their mom for anything in the world." Rebecca admitted, fixing the pillows behind Nicki's back. "Can you sit up for me just a liiittle bit more?" Nicki did so. "Thanks hun. I'll be right, right back. I need a few more pillows." Rebecca jogged out of the room to fetch some more.

"Drake?" Nicki said without looking at him.

"Yea babe?"

"I'm scared… what if I can't do this?" She looked at him.

"You can do this. There's no reason to be scared. The nurse said you'd get the hang of it." He crossed his arms and placed them on the edge of the bed.

"No, it's not just that…" Nicki inhaled, her lips began to quiver. "What are we gonna do with a baby? What if we can't give him everything he needs?"

Drake could see the fear in her eyes as they began to water. "Onika… baby, we're gonna be wonderful parents. It isn't a matter of, "what if we can't…" because we can. We can give him everything he needs, alright? There's nothin' to worry about sweetie. I know you're scared, but just remember I'm here for the both of you and I always will be. If there's somedays you feel like you can't, look to me. I'll take care of everything. We got this, Nic." He smiled. He then wiped the tears away from her face.

Just then, Rebecca walked back in with the extra pillows. "Alright, alright. Got the pillows, now Dad, I'm gonna need your help." She handed him two pillows. "If you can, just slide those under her knees for me.

Drake stood up, pulling the bed sheets open on his side. He carefully lifted Nicki's legs and placed the pillows beneath her knees. "Is that comfortable?"

"Yea." Nicki nodded.

"Alright, dear. I'm just gonna slip this pillow under your elbow and put this one on your lap for your baby. The way you're holding him is just perfect."

"Oh my God. I'm so nervous." Nicki said with a half smile.

"That's normal for first time moms, but that should all go away once he's latched on."

"And what if he doesn't want it? What do I do?"

"Well it's not uncommon for a newborn to reject the nipple the first few times, but you just gotta keep tryin. He'll take it eventually."

Drake placed his hand on top of Nicki's head, smoothing her hair back. "You're gonna do just fine babe."

Nicki let out a deep breath and smiled at him. "I hope so."

"Alright," Rebecca began. "Since his head is already over here on your left, this is where we'll start. If you can, jus pull the top of your robe down a little."

After Nicki did this, the nurse instructed her on how to offer her milk to her son. About five tries later, Liddle Aubrey still hadn't latched on.

"This isn't working." Nicki admitted.

"Now don't be discouraged, some babies take longer than others. This isn't anything I haven't encountered before. Can we just try again?"

Nicki sighed and offered again. The baby turned his head away. Nicki placed her hand over her face as tears started to well in her eyes.

Sitting back in the wheelchair on Nicki's right, Drake placed his hand on her knee to comfort her. "It's okay, baby."

"No Aubrey, it's not!" She snapped. Nicki looked him in the eyes as she cried. "I… can't do this… I can't!"

Drake didn't respond. He knew no matter what he said, Nicki's mindset still wouldn't change. He just licked his lips and glanced at his child. He reached up to hold Liddle Aubrey's tiny hand while Nicki continued to cry. "Hey man…" He spoke softly. "Mommy reeeally wants you to eat. I know you're hungry, huh lil man? Can you eat for mommy and daddy? Hm? It'll make you biiig and strooong."

Drake's baby talk made Nicki giggle through her tears. "Babe stop." She grinned, wiping her face.

"Actually," Rebecca cut in. "That's the way to go. You wanna talk to your baby, coax him."

Drake looked at Nicki and made a face while sticking out his tongue. She grinned at him.

"So you wanna try again, Nic?" He asked.

She took a moment before nodding 'yes'. Drake spoke to his son while Nicki offered. Liddle Aubrey finally latched on causing Nicki to gasp. "He did it…" She said. "He did it."

"Yaaaayy!!" Rebecca clapped.

Drake and Nicki both laughed at her.

"Now what?" Nic asked.

"It's not hurting any is it?"

"No. It just feels weird, haha."

"Ok, that's great. It should never hurt or feel uncomfortable to nurse. You want you and your baby to be as relaxed as possible." Rebecca replied. "And if ever it is a bit discomforting, you just wanna reposition him and start over until you're both in a comfy spot."

"So how long do I keep him on?"

"He'll stop on his own. And that's usually when he falls asleep. You wanna nurse him about eight to twelve times a day every hour and a half to three hours or whenever he's hungry."

Nicki and Drake both listened to Rebecca's instructions intently.

"But you don't wanna go more than four hours without feeding him. And this counts for nighttime too so you'll definitely be up nursing during the night. I know it's not the best news, but it's all a part of being a mommy."

"Haha, I figured I wouldn't be sleeping through the night anyways. Is there anything else we should know?"

"Plenty. Some things you'll have to discover on your own, but I can help by telling you as much as I know on what to expect."

"Great. Thank you so much, Rebecca."

The nurse went on schooling the new parents on what to and not to do, and basic parenting tips. After she answered all of Drake and Nicki's questions, she left the two alone with their son. The room was quiet and calm as the snow continued to fall outside of the window. It was just starting to get dark.

Nicki watched her baby boy as he nursed, his eyelids getting heavier and heavier. She lightly held onto the back of his head while her thumb softly moved back and forth over his hair. Drake had been watching from a comfortable distance, his elbows propped up on the edge of the bed, his hands clasped under his chin. Nobody had spoken a word, for no statement could describe how beautiful this moment was. Minutes later, Liddle Aubrey had fallen asleep in Nicki's arms. She carefully detached him from her breast and pulled the hospital gown back up over her shoulder.

"Man that boy can eat." Drake said quietly.

Nicki smiled. "Hush."

"Haha, I'm only sayin'." Drake's pocket then began to vibrate.

Nicki looked over at him as he checked his phone. "Who is it?" She whispered.

"My mom. She may be here already." Drake answered his cell. "Yea?" He stood up and walked over by the window. A moment later, he put his phone back in his pocket and turned back to Nicki with a dissatisfied face.

"What's wrong?" Nicki asked.

"Well she's here. Downstairs waiting, but she said my father called her back at the last minute saying he couldn't make it." He exhaled.

"I'm sorry, honey."

Drake dryly chuckled. "So am I." He shook his head and began walking toward the door. "I'm gonna go get her. I'll be back."

"Alright, babe."

Ten minutes later, Drake returned with Sandi. She walked into the room with the brightest smile on her face. She excitedly, yet quietly waved both her hands at Nicki while mouthing the word "hi." She could tell her grandchild was asleep. Sandi quickly tip-toed over to Nicki.

"Ohhh! Hey beautiful." She said, greeting Nicki with a kiss on the cheek. They both spoke in hushed tones.

"Haha, hi Sandi." She grinned. "Look who arrived."

"I see, haha. He just couldn't wait could he?" She smiled, looking at the baby. "Wow… my first grandchild." Sandi placed the tips of her fingers over her lips. "He's so precious." She looked over at her son. "You know I'm gonna spoil him, don't you?"

Drake smiled and walked over to them. "Mom please… don't."

"Oh hush." She waved him off. "I'm his grandma. It's what us grandmothers do. You don't mind do you Nicki?"

"Well…"

"Not you too?"

Nicki giggled. "I mean, you have good intentions, but I don't want everything to be handed to him. I want him to learn hard work pays off."

"But he's only a baby. Trust me, you'll have plenty of time to instill important life lessons. Just let me have a little fun? I'm old. I don't know how long I'll—"

"Mom???" Drake interjected.

Sandi rolled her eyes. "Oh alright. Fine. I won't spoil him……… that much." She spotted the wheelchair behind her and pulled it up to sit. "Hey, where's Carol? And Robert?"

"Well they should still be on the plane." Nicki answered. "They should be here before the day's over with."

"Great. Can't wait 'til everyone arrives." She grinned, placing her purse on her lap. She opened it and took out a piece of gum. "Want some?" She held the pack up for them to see.

They both declined. Sandi put the gum back in her purse and zipped it up. She then looked at her grandson. "I wish he wasn't sleeping. I just wanna hold him so bad."

Nicki smiled. "You're never gonna wanna let'm go once you get'm in your arms." She looked at her son, softly running the side of her index finger across his cheek.

"I know exactly how that feels. I held Aubrey all the time. I think that's why he turned out to be such a momma's boy." She giggled.

"I am not." Drake said.

Nicki and Sandi both looked at him at the same time, same expression.

"I'm not." He shrugged as he continued to sit on the edge of the bed.

"Ok, babe." Nicki said, pressing her lips together.

"Hey, what's the baby's name?" Sandi asked.

"Nope. Not yet, I'll tell you when everyone gets here. I don't want anybody to miss anything." Nicki responded.

"Is there a story behind it?"

"Absolutely."

Drake smiled. The three then sparked up a conversation and spoke about current and past events. A nurse came in and checked on Nicki and the baby to see how everything was going. Around ten, Drake and Nicki received more visitors. Drake went downstairs to get them leaving Sandi and Nic to talk amongst themselves. Liddle Aubrey was still fast asleep. When Nicki heard hinges creaking minutes later, she trailed off. Her eyes immediately shot towards the door as a smile grew on her face. Mrs. Carol was the first person to step through.

"Mommy!" She shouted in a hushed whisper.

Mrs. Carol smiled while removing her coat. She handed it to Robert as he walked in behind her. "Oh my God." She said in her accent.

Sandi smiled as Carol walked over to them. "Heeey grandma." She said, standing to give Carol a hug.

Nicki grinned watching the two women embrace. They got along so well which pleased both Nicki and Drake. When they pulled apart, Sandi stepped out of the way so Carol could be closer to her daughter.

"Hi sweetheart." Carol smiled, kissing Nicki on her cheek. "Ohh, my baby." She smoothed Nic's cheek with her thumb.

She smiled. "Mommy look." Nicki raised Liddle Aubrey up just a little.

"Ohhh, I see. Look at him." Mrs. Carol placed both her hands on her chest. "He's gorgeous, Onika."

"Thanks ma." She smiled. "Jus wait 'til he opens his eyes."

Mrs. Carol stared down at her grandbaby, just admiring him. Robert then walked over.

"Hey pop." Nicki spoke.

"Hey sweetie." He grinned. "Congratulations."

"Thank you. Come see."

Robert stood next to Carol. "He's so small." He admitted in his heavy accent, looking down at the baby.

"Isn't he?" Nicki added. "Where's Lani and Cai? I want them to see their nephew."

"Your husband walked them down to the cafeteria." Robert replied.

"Ugh, they could've come said hi first."

"It was a long flight honey. Don't rile yourself up. They're just a little hungry." Carol reassured her.

"I guess…" Nicki looked back down at her son.

"What's his name?" Carol asked.

"I'll tell you all when my brothers and husband get back." Just then, Liddle Aubrey began to wiggle about in her arms causing Nicki to gasp. "You guys, I think he's waking up." She smiled. "Sandi come look." The three adults gathered around Nicki's bedside, all eyes on Liddle Aubrey. He moved his fist up to his face and breathed through his nose. His eyes began to slowly flutter open. "Look, look, look!" Nicki said excitedly.

"Ohhh, that baby has blue eyes." Mrs. Carol announced.

"You see???" Nic exclaimed. "Aren't they beautiful??"

"Yes." Sandi answered happily.

"Oh, that boy's gonna be di gyal dem suga." Robert said. They all laughed at his comment.

Liddle Aubrey stared up at his mommy.

"Look how he's looking at you Onika." Carol said. "He knows his mommy, eh?" She smiled.

Nicki pressed her lips together as she looked at her boy. "Yea…" She answered, trying to hold back the cry in her voice. "He does." Nicki reached for his tiny fist. As she held it in her hand, he opened his palm, wrapping his small fingers around her index. Nicki was amazed by the tight grip he had. "Hey sweetie pie. Mommy loves you so much." She spoke through the knot in her throat. Nicki raised her finger to her mouth and kissed his tiny knuckles. There was a peaceful silence until a loud ruckus echoed through the hallway. A plethora of different baritones neared Nicki's room. Everyone's gaze shifted towards the door.

"…when he missed that shot. I put mad money on that game too, B. That's still my team though." Said a loud Jelani as he entered Nicki's room eating a honey bun. Tucked under his arm was a bottled Pepsi.

"Be quiet boy! Don't you come in hear with all that noise!" Mrs. Carol warned him in a hushed shout. Her accent thicker than ever.

Jelani abruptly stopped at the door when he caught his mother's eye. He was well into his thirties, but he never dared to disobey his mom. "Oop! Sorry ma." In behind him walked Micaiah and Drake having a conversation that ceased once they stepped over the threshold.

"Hey Lani! Cai! Come here you two. Come see your nephew!" Nicki said enthusiastically.

"Heeey sis!" Jelani bellowed with a smile on his face.

"Wuddup Nika?" Said a teenaged Micaiah. His voice had cracked awhile ago so he sounded like a young man now.

"Haha, hurry up fat boy." She said to Jelani.

"This is all muscle." He smiled, rubbing his belly.

"Yea, okay." Nicki giggled. "Caiah hurry up, lamb chop."

He half grinned and walked over to his older sister. Carol, Sandi, and Robert stepped out of the way so the boys could be near the new mommy. Nicki received their greetings with kisses on the cheek. Liddle Aubrey then looked at both his uncles.

"Yo," Micaiah began with a smirk. "Why are his eyes blue?" He looked up at Nicki then over at Drake, who was now solitarily standing on Nicki's left.

"Right?" Jelani cut in. "You sure thas ya kid, Drake?"

Nicki gasped as her jaw dropped. She then punched Jelani in his stomach. "Of course he is, stupid!"

Jelani held his stomach and started laughing. "I'm jokin, I'm jokin! Hahaha, calm down Nika."

"Oh, Jelani stop it." Mrs. Carol told him.

"Haha, my bad ma."

"Go sit down Lani." Nicki said. "Your time is up."

"I'll be back lil man." He told his nephew. He then went to go sit on the long couch across the room and finished his honey bun.

"Come 'ere lamb chop."

Micaiah stepped a little closer to Nic. "It's Micaiah…"

"And I don't care if it's John, you're still my lamb chop. Sit." She patted a spot next to her on the bed. Micaiah sat down and waited for his sister to speak. "To answer your question, I don't know why his eyes are blue, but I love them." She smiled. "They're just so big and bright… you know you had big eyes too when you were born? You were jus this tiny little thing with the biggest eyes."

Micaiah tried to hide his smile.

"That's why I call you my lamb chop and I'm not changing that just because you're starting to grow hair in new places."

"Onika stop." Micaiah said, becoming embarrassed.

"What? Everybody in this room has been through what you're going through. Except my liddle man."

"Oh my God…" Micaiah breathed, running his hands over his face. "You're jus like mommy."

Nicki giggled. "Oh, am I? Well that's a good sign."

"No, it's not." He shook his head with a smile.

Nicki laughed at him. "Don't be so dramatic boy."

Drake let a small hiccup of a chuckle escape him causing Nicki to look up to her left. "Don't do it Aubrey." She then looked back to her little brother. "So tell me, how's school?"

"It's alright I guess."

"Caiah?"

"Well I'm passin."

"Cai??? You mean passin wit A's, right?"

"Somethin like that." He shrugged.

"You know what? I can't." Nicki shook her head. "I don't understand how you expect to keep playin football and your grades aren't up to par. We'll talk about this later."

Just then there was a nurse at the door. She knocked before entering although the door was already open. "Hello, hello." She smiled. "How's it going guys? I'm Michelle and I'll be your nurse for the night shift."

Everyone said their hello's as she walked over to Nicki. Micaiah stood up so Michelle could check on her. He went over to sit on the couch with his brother and mom. Robert was leaning back onto a wall near them, Sandi sitting in the wheelchair, Drake still by Nicki's bedside.

"Hi hun, how are you?" She asked Nic.

"I'm great." She smiled.

"That's wonderful. I see the little guy's awake. How many times has he been nursed?"

"Only once. He fell asleep right after. He just woke up actually."

"Okay, so that means somebody needs to be changed, huh?" Michelle smiled at Liddle Aubrey.

"I haven't changed a diaper in years." Nicki admitted.

"Haha, that's okay. I'll take you through all the steps. It should all come back to you immediately. This is your first child?"

"Yes." Nicki answered eagerly.

"Aww, congratulations. Welcome to parenthood." She looked over at Drake. "You must be Dad?"

"Yes." He grinned. "That's my boy. My first child."

"Nice to meet you, Dad." Michelle held out her hand. Drake shook it. "You two must be so happy."

"We are." They answered in sync.

"That's wonderful." She smiled. "Now let's get this little guy changed. You think you can walk with me over here to the changing table?" She asked Nic.

"Sure." Nicki pulled the covers back and moved her legs to hang over the edge of the bed. In her grey hospital socks, Nicki cautiously placed one foot on the floor. When she applied pressure to stand, she could feel the pain in her womb and it showed in her face. "Michelle, I don't think I'm gonna be able to walk over there."

"Okay, that's perfectly fine. I'll see if I can roll it over here."

"Thank you."

After Michelle rolled the changing table to Nicki's bedside, Nicki carefully placed Liddle Aubrey on it's surface. Michelle took her through the changing process a couple times and then Drake. After the infant was diapered, Michelle swaddled him in a yellow blanket with a matching hat. Drake picked him up and cradled him in his arms while the nurse moved the changing table back to the other side of the room. She then told everyone goodbye and that she'd return later.

"Hey man. It's daddy." Drake said to his son. The boy stared up at him with a curious face.

Nicki looked on with a smile.

"So is anyone gonna tell us his name?" Jelani asked.

Drake looked at Nicki. She then looked at her family and nodded her head. "Drake, can you come here please?" She asked.

He walked over and stood next to her bed as she got comfortable under the sheets again. "Yea, babe?"

"Can you sit right here for me?" Nicki patted the bed.

Drake sat down on the edge facing the side of the room everybody was on. Nicki then reached out for his hand so he extended it to her. She placed her palm over his knuckles and held on as he ran his thumb over her fingers. "So you guys…" She began, looking at her and Drake's hand resting on the bed. "I named him something that meant a lot to me… after what Drake and I both experienced, I felt it was only right…" She turned her head to look at all the faces staring back at her. "His name's Aubrey." She smiled, then looked back at Drake. "After his father."

The room filled with smiling faces and a teary-eyed Sandi.

Drake smiled at Nicki then looked at everybody. "I was just as shocked when she told me. I wasn't expecting that at all."

"Well yea…" Nicki began. "That's his name." She giggled.

"That is so sweet, Onika." Mrs. Carol said. "You know, I think we should all meet the doctor who delivered him too. I need to thank him for delivering such a beautiful boy."

"Yes, I agree." Sandi said, wiping her nose with a Kleenex.

Nicki looked at Drake. Her grip on his hand tightened. She was about to speak, but her voice caught in her throat. Her eyes automatically began to water, droplets rolling down her cheeks. She stared into her husband's eyes as she spoke through her tears. "It was around this afternoon when I called Drake. I told him the pain I was in so he left the studio early to come home to me. I had no clue what was happening to me. I didn't know whether I was in labor or not…… but I was…… My water broke before Drake made it home. I started getting my contractions soon after. I was so scared and it hurt so bad, but I didn't know what to do. I was home alone just waiting. Drake called for an ambulance, but they never showed… my contractions were getting worse and closer together…… when Aubrey finally made it home, he helped me into my coat and my boots as fast as he could. We were on our way out of the house when I got another contraction…… that one did it… it seemed to last an eternity. I knew I had to get to the hospital, but he knew there was no way we were gonna make it in time… so he had me sit down, by the front door…"

"…I removed her coat and her shoes…"

"…and my sweats…"

"And I waited out her contractions with her. She was in so much pain… I never witnessed her hurting like that before and it pained me because I couldn't do anything about it…"

"He did what he could though. He went to go get some pillows for me, he prayed for us, and he gave me a little pep talk. I really appreciated that… a lot. But after some time, it didn't matter how soft those pillows were or how effective his pep talk was…" She sniffled. "I could feel the baby coming so I started pushing."

"I told her not to because we didn't know how dialated she was, but I guess her body knew better than I did…"

"It was the worst feeling ever. I had no medication to numb the pain."

"I was trying to keep her calm, but it didn't matter what I did… all I knew was that I needed to deliver our baby."

"And he did." She cried. "Aubrey delivered our son. When I heard him crying, I was so happy nothing went wrong… I held him so close… and then I… I… I started to feel a bit dizzy and my vision was getting blurry…" Nicki squeezed Drake's hand tighter. "I passed the baby to Drake and after that… I don't remember anything……"

"What? Onika what happened?" Carol asked, worry all over her face.

"She zoned out." Drake answered. "I was talking to her, but she wasn't there. I started to get scared when she stopped responding to me. All she did was look around the room… I felt like she didn't know where she was. I called 911 and they sent out another ambulance. The dispatcher told me to keep her awake so I tried my best… she also had me cut Aubrey's umbilical cord so I did and when I got back to Nicki, she looked worse…… I pleaded with her to stay awake…"

Nicki placed her free hand over her mouth to mask her cries. She squeezed her eyes shut as she held onto Drake's hand.

He looked away from her and over to their family. "She closed her eyes and I started panicking…" He looked to the floor. "Then she stopped breathing and… my heart dropped. Everything seemed so unreal. I thought she was gone." Drake shook his head as he pressed his lips together. "The ambulance came and…" He cleared his throat. "They came and they took her and our son away."

"I remember waking up in this hospital with an IV in my arm wondering where my baby was. I wanted to hold him so bad, but the nurse told me he was in the NICU having some tests done. I asked her what happened and she told me I lost a lot of blood which caused me to lose consciousness so I needed a transfusion. She told me I'd be here longer than expected because they needed to monitor my blood pressure. After that she took me to this one room where they ran all these tests on me. I needed Drake there with me, but I didn't know where he was."

He looked up at her. "I was right there with you the whole time. As soon as the ambulance reached the ER I was right there. I was beside you when they wheeled you in. They had Aubrey laying on your chest until some nurses came out to take him away. It all happened so fast I didn't know where they were taking him. They wouldn't let me go behind the double doors with either of you so all I could do was wait in the waiting area. Nobody told me anything for a long time. Eventually, a nurse came out to talk to me about Aubrey. I was so relieved. But I was still worried about you. She didn't have your charts so that's when I took it upon myself to find you…"

"I'm so happy you did. I really needed you." Nicki admitted, wiping her tears from her face.

"Wow…" Micaiah said. "I'm sorry all that happened to you guys… I'm glad you're okay, Onika. You and my nephew." He stood up and walked over to Drake. "Thanks for takin care of my sister, man. You're a real good dude. I think you're gonna be a great father." He held out his hand and the two shook.

"Thanks Micaiah." Drake said.

Cai nodded his head and took a step back.

"Cai come 'ere." Nicki called, tears still in her eyes. She held out her arms for a hug. When he reached her, she squeezed him into a tight embrace. "Thank you sweetie. That was really mature of you. You're growing up already." She gave him a kiss on his cheek. "I love you, lamb chop."

"Love you too, sis." He stepped back as Carol, Sandi, Robert and Jelani approached Nicki's bedside. They all gave her their individual hugs and thanked God she was okay. They then gave Drake his props and thanked him for being so brave. A good half-hour later, Nicki's doctor came to pay her a visit. Aubrey Jr.'s birth story had been spreading around the maternity ward like wildfire. The doctor wanted to award Drake with something special. He received a certificate for being an honorary obstetrician. The doctor had it framed and all so it looked official. She couldn't stay long since she was still on duty so she said her goodbyes and left. After awhile Micaiah had fallen asleep on the couch and Robert, Drake, Jelani, and Sandi were in the cafeteria leaving Nicki and Carol to converse amongst themselves. Aubrey was now in his grandma's arms as Nicki looked on.

"He is such a handsome boy. You and Drake did very well, eh?"

Nicki smiled. "Haha, thank you mommy." Liddle Aubrey began to stick out his tongue. "What are you doing silly boy?" Nicki asked, looking at her son.

"I believe he's hungry, Onika." She looked at her daughter. "Are you feeding him naturally?"

"Yea, but it's really hard. He didn't take the first couple of tries."

Mrs. Carol smacked her lips. "Oh, that's nothing, chile." She waved her off. "You took almost a week."

"What??" Nicki asked in shock.

"Yes. I thought there was something wrong with me, but no. You were just a stubborn little thing."

Nicki laughed. "Oh my God. Mommy, that's crazy."

"You're telling me. I started to think that maybe you were just a little… behind."

"Are you saying I was slow?"

"Yes, very very slow." Carol admitted, handing Aubrey over to Nicki.

"I can't believe you just called me slow." Nicki laughed.

"It's jus the way you were, chile. But as soon as you started walking and talking, you were anything but. You caught on so quickly."

Nicki smiled, placing a pillow on her lap. "I'm so glad you're here, ma. I'm really gonna need your advice on a lot of this parenting stuff."

"I'm happy to help." She smiled. "Do you have an extra blanket, dear? You're gonna wanna cover yourself up."

"The one he's wrapped in is the only one the nurse left us with."

"Okay, well we're just gonna take that blanket off'm." Mrs. Carol stood up and unwrapped the baby. She pulled Nicki's cover back and repositioned the pillow on her lap. "Which side did he feed last?"

"Um, the left."

"Okay, we're gonna switch. You wanna get'm used to nursing on both sides." Carol helped Nicki rotate Aubrey to the right side. "Are you comfortable?"

"Mhm." Nicki pulled the covers back up over her and her son's legs.

"Alright, so go ahead."

"Um, can you turn around?"

"Oh larsh, chile." Mrs. Carol rolled her eyes. "Fine." She then turned around.

Nicki offered the baby her milk and he latched on immediately. "Yaaaay! My baby's not slow!"

Mrs. Carol giggled. "Can I turn around now?"

"Yup."

Mrs. Carol picked up the yellow blanket Aubrey had been wrapped in and went to place it over Nicki's chest.

"Heeey, what are you doin?" She stopped her.

"What does it seem like, chile? I'm covering you."

"But I still wanna see'm" Nicki whined.

"Well we don't wanna see you." Carol shot back. She placed the yellow blanket over her daughter's chest. "You'll have plenty of time to admire him, Onika. Don't fret."

Nicki didn't respond. She exhaled through her nose and continued to hold her child. A few minutes later, everyone returned from the cafeteria. It was now nearly midnight.

"Hey babe." Drake said as he leaned down to kiss Nicki's forehead. "I brought you something to eat. I know you haven't had anything all day."

"Thank you so much, baby. What'd you get me?"

Drake rolled the food tray over to Nicki's left and placed her food on top. "Well…" He began to slide the tray over her lap.

"Easy babe. Watch his head." She pulled the tray toward her just close enough.

"You guys good?"

"Yea."

"Alright. Well the café didn't have much to choose from so," He sat down on the edge of the bed. "I got you some meatballs and mashed potatoes. It was the best thing on the menu."

"It doesn't matter if all they had were Ramen noodles. I'm starving." She smiled. "Thanks, honey."

"You're welcome." He lifted the top from her dish and removed the fork and napkin from it's plastic packaging. "Here." He handed her the fork.

"Thanks… did you get me anything to drink?" Drake sat a bottle of Dasani on her food tray. "Thank you." Nicki then attempted to bring a meatball to her mouth. However, the gravy was dripping. She didn't want to make a mess, but she couldn't quite lean forward to reach her tray.

Drake noticed. "I got it." He took her fork and began to feed her.

"Well who's the baby here?" Carol asked, watching him feed her daughter.

Drake and Nicki both looked over at her. Nicki covered her mouth and started grinning. After she finished eating, her primary nurse came in to check her vitals. Her blood pressure was still a bit high so her doctor decided to keep her overnight. As the night went on, everyone started to get restless. Jelani had found a spot on the floor to sit, with his father, and Carol shared half of the couch with a still sleeping Micaiah. Sandi was sitting in the wheelchair dozing off as Drake sat on the edge of Nicki's hospital bed talking to Robert and Jelani about a recent sporting event. Nicki was sitting up in bed watching Liddle Aubrey sleep as she cradled him in her arms.

"Onika?" Carol called, resting her head on her palm.

Nicki looked over to her mother.

"I think it's about time we go sweetie. This couch is killing my back."

"Oh… well ok… are you guys staying at a hotel?"

"No." Drake cut in. "I gave them the guest rooms."

"Yes, he sure did. There's a nice queen-sized bed with my name on it." Carol admitted, rising to her feet with a smile.

"Haha, okay ma. Well you guys drive safe. You're coming back tomorrow, right?"

"Of course, dear." Mrs. Carol said. She then tapped Micaiah for him to wake up. "Come on son. We're leaving." He didn't budge.

"Cai get up." Jelani said, standing up off the floor. The boy still didn't move. Jelani walked over to him. He then playfully hit him in the head with his empty Pepsi bottle.

Micaiah jumped up ready to fight, but noticed it was just his brother. "You play too much." He said with red eyes, punching Jelani in his arm.

"Boys don't start. Put your coat on Cai. We're leaving." Carol told them.

"Mom?" Drake called.

Sandi looked up. "What? What's happening?" She noticed everyone putting their coats on.

"Everybody's leaving." Drake answered. "You stayin here?"

"If they give me a bed." She giggled. "I can't sleep in this chair, Aubrey. I think I'll go too." She stood up and began to put on her parka. "I'll be back tomorrow, alright dear?" She said to Nicki.

"Alright. You be careful out there Sandi."

"Oh, don't worry about me. I'll be fine." She smiled.

When everyone was all prepared to go, they said their goodbyes to Nicki and Drake walked them down to the lobby. When he returned to his wife, he found her yawning in bed.

"Somebody's tired." He said, shutting the door behind him.

Nicki looked at him with lazy eyes and a smile. "Only a teenie bit." She showed him the amount with her fingers.

Drake walked over to her bedside, pulling up the wheelchair yet again to sit in.

"Nooo, Drake don't. Get up here with me." She said, pulling back the covers.

"Haha, I don't think that bed's made for two people."

"Well it will be tonight. Get up here… and take off your shoes."

"Okay boss." He removed his black, Timberlands and climbed in facing Nicki.

She then pulled some covers over him. "See? Not so bad." She gave him a kiss on the lips. "Thank you for being so amazing, Aubrey."

"You're welcome." He kissed her back. "I love you."

"I love you too." Nicki half smiled then looked back at their son, whose head was now on his mommy's left.

Drake kissed Nicki's cheek. As he lay on his side, he propped his elbow up on one of the pillows, resting his head on his hand. He then put his arm around her waist as she cuddled into him. Together, they watched their baby boy sleep.

"He is so white…" Drake whispered.

"Haha, like you weren't?"

"Well I still am."

"Bwahaha! Babe stop. You're gonna make me wake him up… And I'm sure he's gonna get some color to him soon. It's only been a few hours."

"Yea… a few hours… And it still feels so surreal. Like… I'm really a father."

"And I'm a mommy. And together, we're gonna be the bestest parents in the whooole wiiide wooorld." Nicki said in her baby voice.

"You bet we are."

Just then, Liddle Aubrey started to wiggle around, his lips twisting and fingers moving.

"Heeey, look who's waking up." Drake said.

"Oh my God, I knoooww." Nicki sat up a little causing Drake to do the same. The baby then slowly started to cry. "Oh no, sweetie. Please don't."

"You think he's hungry?"

"He can't be. I just fed him half an hour ago."

"Oh… maybe he's wet?"

Nicki checked his diaper. "No, he's not."

"Did you burp him?"

"Well he fell asleep right after he nursed and remember, Rebecca said not to wake him just to burp him."

"Well he's up now."

Nicki placed Liddle Aubrey in the burping position near her shoulder. She softly patted his back encouraging him to burp. Minutes later, a small belch escaped the baby boy and he began to calm down. "Aww, was that not the cutest thing you've heard?"

"Hahaha, yea… cute."

Nicki then cradled him in her arms once again. She removed the yellow hat from his head and started smoothing his hair back with her thumb. "You know… I would've never imagined him to be this beautiful, Aubrey… our baby boy. When I look at him, I see another part of you and me… our innocence just balled up into one."

"Yea…"

The couple watched their son as he drifted back to sleep. Once he was out, Nicki started to doze off.

"Nic?" Drake called.

"Hm?" She answered sleepily.

"I'm gonna take it from here. I see you fallin asleep." He went to reach for the baby.

Nicki pulled away. "Nooo, I'm not sleepy. I got it." She yawned.

"Onika? You're over here dozin off and you're not sleepy?"

"No."

"Babe, go to bed. You're gonna thank me later for this." He reached for his son again.

"But, but I'm gonna miss something." She whined, letting Drake remove the child from her arms.

"You're not. He's a newborn. They don't do much." He chuckled at his wife's sleepy behavior. "Go to sleep, sweetheart. I'll wake you up if he starts walkin."

Nicki closed her eyes and cuddled up with a pillow. "You promise?"

"Haha, yea babe. I promise."

Please comment.

Chap. 2: The Catch

Chapter 2:

"Hey babe. You still at the studio?"

"Yea, is everything okay? Your back still hurt?"

"Only a liddle." She lied. Her back had been aching since the morning and it wasn't getting any better. Drake wanted to stay home with her, but Nicki convinced him to go.

"I could come home now if you want." He suggested.

"No, no. Stay. Everything's good. We're fine. I only called to tell you to pick up some more pickles and a carton of vanilla ice cream. We're almost out." Nicki spooned out a few more pre-sliced pickles from the jar, topping her ice cream with them. "Get the big cartoon please."

"Alright, no problem. You sure everything's okay?"

"Yesss Aubrey. Everything's fine, honey. Haha, you can't leave me alone for two seconds without asking that. Stop worrying, Nicki good." She smiled to herself, taking a bite of her pickles and ice cream.

"And you're right. I can't go two seconds without asking that. I'm just making sure my babies are okay."

"And your babies ARE okay. Now go. Back to work please. I don't wanna hold you up any longer."

"You're not."

"Oh whatever. I'll call you if we need anything else. Stop worrying zaddy."

"Haha, I can't promise. But talk to you later, bae. Love you."

"Love you too, muah!"

"Ha, bye."

"Byyye!" She sang, hanging up her cellphone and grabbing the remote control. She flipped through the guide until she found what was worth watching. Forensic Files.

About a few minutes into the show, Nicki had to use the bathroom. She slid to the edge of the couch, both hands on either side of her, and raised up slowly, belly first. When she successfully made it up, she waddled to the bathroom holding her womb and lower back. Drake thought she was the cutest thing waddling around the house; her now eight month belly protruding forward. He smiled whenever she walked into the room. Nicki glowed wherever she went, no matter her mood or the time of day. Lately, all she did was sleep, pee, shower and eat. Of course she was no longer exercising with her husband and their dog, Catrina, but sleeping in as he went about with what had become routine. Sometimes Nicki would get up early to watch the two run around the track, but that became rare the more her womb grew.

It was now mid afternoon so Nicki was already dressed; her hair up in a messy bun with her bangs cascading over her forehead and wearing a grey wife beater with a pair of Drake's navy blue basketball shorts. Although it was cold and nearing winter, their Toronto home was nice and toasty. It looked picture perfect topped with a layer of snow on the roof and lawn. When Nic emerged from the lavatory she headed for the kitchen, picking her empty ice cream bowl and pickle jar up on the way. Catrina was on her heels. Nicki rinsed the bowl and spoon then loaded them into the dishwasher with a few other used dishes. She started the cycle and moved toward the pantry, opening it to reveal what seemed like an endless surplus of snacks. Nicki picked over bags of chips, cookies, and even her cranberries and almonds. She couldn't stand how they tasted to her now. Failing to find food she wanted, Nicki made her way to the freezer. She pulled out a bag of Tyson's chicken strips and made a dissatisfied face.

"These aren't the spicy ones." She said aloud. Catrina looked up at her, licking out her tongue. Nicki held the bag and searched the freezer for the spicy chicken strips. "I know his ass better not have hid them." She mumbled, becoming irritated. Drake had warned her about eating spicy foods while pregnant because they gave her heartburn, but she didn't care. If she wanted it, she wanted it. He knew how hard headed and stubborn she could be so he purposely misplaced all things spicy to keep her from eating them.

"Ugh… just great." She sighed, sitting the bag on the nearest counter. Nicki began to remove all the frozen foods from the freezer. Out came the carton of Drake's ice cream, Eggo waffles, packaged breakfast meats, tv dinners and whatever else was in her way. After a minute or two, she found what she was looking for stuffed all the way in the back. "Onika wins again." She smirked and reached for the bag.

Nicki warmed four spicy strips in the oven while she put the frozen foods back in the freezer. When all was done, she placed her strips on a pink plate with a glob of mayonnaise on the side for dipping and headed into the living room with Catrina close by.

"What is it girl?" Nicki asked, positioning herself on the sofa. Catrina tilted her head, watching Nicki eat. "Well ya can't be hungry because I already fed you."
The dog whimpered as Nicki continued to eat the spicy chicken strips. "What?" She asked with a giggle. Catrina sighed and laid down next to her owners' pink, slippered feet.

Around the third strip, Nicki began to feel a little discomfort. Her back was still bothering her and now her chest. She soon diagnosed the burning sensation as heartburn. Nicki set the half-finished strip on her plate and called it quits. Instead of finishing her food, she dumped it and hand washed her dish. About an hour later, the burning subsided. Nicki was now laying on the couch with a heating pad on her lower back. She was experiencing a dull pain that seemed to envelop the entirety of her small frame. She'd had back pain plenty times so not thinking much of it, she slept it off. Or tried too. Nicki was tired, indeed, but the wavering pain wouldn't let her sleep. She closed her eyes and tried to drift off again, but couldn't. To ease the pain, she shifted her position a little, yet she didn't feel any relief. "Oh my God… what the fuck…" Nicki groaned, tugging the cord out of the socket and tossing the heating pad on the coffee table; it wasn't doing anything for her. She sat up, on the edge of the sofa, and held her womb. It too began to ache. Worried, Nicki reached for her cellphone and dialed Drake. He answered on the first ring.

"Is everything okay??"

"Yes… No… I, I don't know."

"What do you mean, Nic? What's wrong?"

"Baby my back is killing me and it hasn't stopped hurting since this morning. I tried the heating pad, but it didn't do shit. In fact, I feel worse. My whole body hurts."

"Whoa, Onika slow down. I'm on my way. Are you in labor?"

"I don't know. My water didn't break or anything. It breaks before contractions, right?" She asked, voice heavy with uncertainty.

"I thought the doctor said it breaks after?"

"Aw fuck. Aubrey I don't know. I don't know! Oh my God… I don't fucking know." Nicki began to panic, breathing heavily with all kinds of thoughts racing through her mind.

"I'm gonna need you to calm down for me, okay? I'm getting in the car now. I'll be there as soon as I can."

"Okay, alright… Is it still snowing?"

"Yea, but I'll be fine. And I think you're right. Your water should break first, but it didn't so you're good. I'm gonna need you to stay in one spot though, okay? And try not to move so much. I don't want anything to cause it to break before I get there."

"Okay. Hurry please. I'm not feeling any better."

"I'm driving as fast as I can, baby. I promise I'll be there soon. Thirty minutes tops. Need me to stay on the phone with you?"

"No. I just wanna lay here on the couch."

"Alright. If anything happens, and I mean ANYTHING happens, and you feel like you're in trouble and need help or if your water breaks, please call the paramedics before you call me. That's all I ask. You and our babies health come before anything, including me."

"Yes Aubrey. I promise." She sighed, laying back on the couch. "Just hurry please. Be careful."

"I will. I love you guys."

"We love you too."

"See you shortly."

"Kay. Bye baby." Nicki hung up, throwing her arm over her face. She slowly breathed in and out to calm herself. "Everything's gonna be fine Onika…" She pulled her shirt up over her belly, exposing her stomach, and began to rub her womb with both hands. The pains were intensifying, making her more uncomfortable. Nicki then experienced a sudden pop which was as audible as it felt. She froze and opened her eyes with a quickness. She looked down at her belly wondering what had just happened. After a few minutes with no result, she figured it was nothing serious. She turned onto her left side for comfort, feeling for a pillow to lie her head on. Only a couple seconds passed when Nicki felt the urge to pee. She then started to feel something wet trickle down her thigh. "You've gotta be kidding me…" She rose from the couch as quickly as a pregnant woman could and started toward the bathroom. "Nooo!" She frowned. "I'm really pissing on myself. Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God." She said aloud, in disbelief, while the trickling continued. As she made it to their bedroom, she was halted by a sudden gush. Frozen in place with eyes wide, Nicki's inner legs were now soaked. "That's not piss………… Oh God…… Um……" Breathing heavily, but trying not to panic, Nicki spoke to herself for reassurance. "Your phone, Onika. Get your phone." She doubled back to the living room to retrieve her Blackberry. Before she could reach the couch she was struck by a sharp pain. Nicki was immediately thrown to her hands and knees. She clenched her stomach while gritting her teeth with eyes shut tight. The pain grew as her tolerance for it shrunk. "HHMMMMMMM!!!" She hummed, nearing tears. "Ohhh Goood!! Nooooo!! Nooo!!" She begged, shaking her head with tears streaming down her cheeks. Nicki was experiencing her first ever contraction and the pain was unbearable. It lasted almost an entire minute. When it stopped, she crawled her way into the living room, grabbed her phone off of the coffee table and started dialing.

"Hello?!"

"BABY! I need you! Please hurry up!! Where are you?!?" She frantically spoke into the phone, her words running together.

"I'm about to turn onto the highway, I'll be there soon. Are you in labor yet?? Did you call 911??"

"Yes and no!"

"What???"

"I'm in labor, Aubrey!!! My water broke and I've already had my first contraction!"

"Jesus Christ…" He said under his breath. "Well the ambulance is on their way, right???"

"I didn't call them yet."

"ONIKA?! Wha- I- WHY?!?!"

"Don't yell at me, okay?!" She cried. "I'm sorry, I got scared. I didn't know who else to call." She admitted, wiping away her tears.

"911!!!!" He quickly shot back, getting almost as frantic as she was.

"Stooop!!" She whined with teary eyes.

"Baby, I'm sorry. I'm, I'm sorry. Please, just call them. Right now. Just call the— wait, no… I'll call them. I'll call. I'm gonna leave you on the phone. Do NOT hang up for any reason."

"Okay." She nodded with a sniffle.

Drake clicked over and quickly dialed 911.

"911. What's your emergency?"

"Yea, I need an ambulance at 1116 Bornun Way IMMEDIATELY. My wife is in labor. She just called me in a panic and her water has already broken and everything."

"Okay sir. I take it she's home alone?"

"Yes. All alone. We have a dog, but I doubt that matters."

"No. It does. Are you on your way to her right now?"

"Of course. I just hit traffic so you may get to her before I do. Please hurry ma'am."

"Ambulance is already on the way."

"Okay. Great. Thank you so much." Drake clicked back over to Nicki. "Nic?"

"Yea, I'm here."

"The ambulance is on their way now. They will probably get to you before I do."

"But Aubrey? I want you with me."

"It's not about me right now Onika. I need you and our baby safe. Is your overnight bag ready?"

"Um, yea. It's in our room."

"Okay, if you can, get it and—" Drake was interrupted by police sirens. He looked into his rear view mirror and saw red and blue lights in the distance. "Um, get the bag and put it by the door." He pulled over to the side of the road to let the cop pass.

"Okay. I'm getting it now."

The cop pulled over too. "What the fuck?"

"Excuse me?"

"No, not you baby. Uh…" He tried to think of something other than the truth to tell her. He didn't want her to freak out. "Nothing. I just did something stupid… Hey babe? Can you hold on for just a sec?"

"Yea."

Drake put his phone on mute and sat it in the cup holder as he watched the policeman step out of his car and approach his white Phantom. The cop knocked on the window signaling Drake to roll it down. He did.

"Can I help you officer?"

The cop peeked into Drake's car, trying to inspect it with his eyes. "Do you know how fast you were going, sir?"

"Really. I don't have time for small talk. My wife is—"

"Lemme see your license and registration please."

"Come on man. My wife is in labor! Don't do this to me."

"Is she in the car with you?"

"No. But I—"

"License and registration."

Drake's temper grew large. He flared his nostrils and gave the cop a dirty look. "Fuck you." He rolled his window up and sped off, almost running over the cops foot.

"HEY?!" The officer yelled after him. He then ran back to his car and hopped in. The sirens began to blare once more and without looking, the policeman pulled out onto the icy road. Before he could get anywhere, his vehicle was slammed into by a speeding ambulance.

"AUBREY?! WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED TO THIRTY MINUTES TOPS?!?!?"

"Onika, baby, breathe. Please. I'm driving as fast as I can, but these roads are slick. Just breathe."

"Fuck those got damn breathing exercises Aubrey. I swear to God! No, I don't swear. I don't swear." Nicki was becoming more and more irritable. Her contractions were quickening and getting stronger with each one. "Hurry the fuck UP!!! The ambulance isn't even here yet!!"

"What do you mean they're not there?!? They should've BEEN there!"

"THEY'RE NOT HERE!!"

"Okay… for one thing, I'm gonna need you to stop yelling at me like that. Secondly, please pleeease calm down before your blood pressure rises or something. I don't need you upset."

Nicki didn't respond.

"Hello???" He heard what started off as a small whimper turn into a low cry.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean it." She cried.

"It's okay. Stop crying. Hopefully they'll be there soon."

"Hopefully…" She said breathlessly.

"Nic? You okay?" He was answered by a loud hum. "Nicki??" What had been a hum turned into a loud scream. Drake held the phone a little ways from his ear until the noise stopped. "Onika?"

"Hmm???"

"How far are they apart?"

"I don't know." She answered, out of breath.

"You're not keeping track??"

"I don't know."

"Well how long are they lasting?"

"I don't know."

Drake sighed and pressed harder on the gas.

"Hurry please. I don't know how long I can hold on."

"What? No. Don't talk like that. We're gonna get you to the hospital, okay? I'm almost there. I may end up driving you there myself. Please time your contractions for me."

"Alright Aubrey. I will… I can't believe this is all really happening… We're really gonna be parents…"

"Yea… kinda crazy isn't it?" He smiled.

"Mhm." She smiled too.

"Is the front door unlocked?"

"No."

"Alright. Stay where you are. I'll just use my key." He said, pulling into their drive way. "Where's Catrina?"

"She's right here. She's been under me all day."

"Mkay." Drake cut the engine and jogged to the front door. "Where are you?"

"Living room."

Once inside, Drake hurried to the living room. He hung up when he saw her laying on the floor. "Um… why are you on the floor?"

Nicki opened her eyes to look at him. "Whoa… I didn't even hear you come in." She took the phone from her ear and hung up.

Drake advanced toward her to help her up. "So you're on the floor because?"

"It's comfortable Aubrey. That's why. That's why I'm on the floor. I mean, it's not like I was having excruciating contractions or anything. That'd be insane, right?"

He side eyed her as he helped her onto the couch. "Alright. Maybe that was a dumb question… where are your snow boots?"

"They should be by the front door."

Drake raced to the front door. He grabbed her snow boots and her OVO/Canada Goose parka from the coat rack. Nicki had already changed her clothes so now she was in sweatpants and sweatshirt. Drake put her boots on for her and helped her into her coat.

"Okay. Is that it?"

"Yea. Can you get that notebook please?" She pointed to a red, spiral book on the coffee table.

"What is it?" Drake asked, picking it up and flipping through it.

"I wrote the times in there. We need to leave like right now."

"Come on." He took her by the hand and lead her toward the front door. Before they even reached it, Nicki stopped abruptly. Drake looked back at her when he felt her come to a halt, her grip on his hand tightening. "Nic come on. Whatever you forgot, leave it. We gotta go."

She looked up at him, fright pooling in her wide eyes. "We're not gonna make it." She whispered, her voice quivering with fear. Nicki squeezed his hand harder as another contraction began. Drake had no clue what to do. Should he still put her in the car and risk having the baby on the way there? Or should they stay and wait for their promised ambulance? His mind filled with tons of questions and no answers. Everything seemed to drone around him. He was trapped deep in his own thoughts. Nicki quickly broke the silence. Her humming fading into a highly audible volume. "Ohhh God! Nooo, pleeeaase?!" She begged in a panicked state.

Drake quickly decided their fate and moved into action. "Nicki sit down."

"Nooo!!! We need to get to the hospital Aubrey! We need to gooo!!" She yelled in pain.

"Sit down Onika. Like you said, we're not gonna make it. And our baby isn't gonna be born on the road. I'm not havin that. So please, jus sit on the floor for me."

Nicki gave in and let him help her to the floor. She began to cry as he started to remove her coat. "I don't wanna do this anymore, Drake… Please just make it all stop… I'm not ready."

He looked her in the face and could tell she was tired. But he couldn't let her give up. The baby was on it's way whether she was ready or not.

"I wish I could just take all the pain away. I really do, baby. I promise you I would if I could… I'm gonna need you to stay strong for me though, okay? I know you can do it. You're my little warrior king remember?" He asked, removing her shoes. "You're stronger than anybody, right?"

Nicki nodded her head. "I am."

"Yea… you are. And you always protect your kingdom, right? No matter how big the war?"

"I do." She sniffled.

"Right. You do. And who always comes out on top?" He asked, removing her sweatpants.

"Me."

"Yea babe. You… and you're able to do that all on your own, but guess what? I'm here with you, okay? We're gonna get through this war together and come out on top with a beautiful, healthy baby girl or boy. Sounds good, right?"

"Yes." She nodded.

Drake wiped the tears away from her face. "That's my girl." He removed his coat and rolled up his sleeves. "I'll be right back. I'm gonna go call your doctor and let her know what's up. Yell for me if anything happens."

Nicki nodded and rested her head back against the wall, closing her eyes. She softly, almost inaudibly, began to sing an old hymn. "This little light of mine… I'm gonna let it shine… ohh, this little light of mine… I'm gonna let it shine… let it shine, let it shine, let it… shine." She yawned after the last word and started to drift off. Minutes later, she was awakened by another contraction. "AAUUUBREEEEYY?!?!" She screamed, pulling her knees up toward her shoulders. He came running to her, near the front door, with an armload of towels and a blanket. He dropped them near her as she reached out for his hand. He extended it to her as he knelt down to her level.

"I NEED TO PUUUUSH!!!"

Drake's eyes grew wide. "No baby, wait! DON'T push!!!"

She took a breath. "Aaaaaaaarrggggghhhhhh!!!!" Beads of sweat began to form on her face as she squeezed his hand. Her bangs were practically glued to her forehead. Once her contraction ceased, she stopped pushing and began to breathe easier.

"Onika please don't push. We don't know if you're dialated enough sweetie. I don't want you hurt yourself or the baby, alright?"

Nicki shot him a mean look and replied through clenched teeth. "My contractions are minutes apart. If I wasn't dialated enough, I don't think my body would've had the urge to PUSH!" She snatched her hand away from his and wiped her sweat.

"………well… even if that was the real thing, I don't think our baby could've gotten through those." He pointed to her underwear. She reached down to take them off, but Drake stopped her. "Hold on." He searched through the pile of towels to find a few for her to sit on.

"What are all those for?"

"You. Lift up, if you can." Nicki did as he ordered and he slid some towels under her, straightening them out as he went. He then removed her panties.

"What did the doctor say when you called?"

"She told me to call an ambulance and I told her I'd already done that. Then she told me to keep my hands clean at all times and that we'd need plenty of towels. She said to keep timing your contractions and if the baby got here before the paramedics that I should wrap it up to keep it warm. Hence the blanket."

Nicki stared at him blankly. She could feel her every heart beat, hear every thud/thumping sound it made. She was more scared now than she thought she could ever be. "That's it?" She managed to utter.

"Yea babe." He reached out and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "That's it…"

"But what about all the tools?? The equipment, the monitors??? The, the doctors?! THE EPIDURAL?!?!" Nicki's breathing quickened.

"There isn't much else to a home birth, I guess. But baby please, don't panic. Just breathe."

"Don't tell me not to fucking panic! I'm sitting on a fucking hardwood floor, Drake! In my own got damn home!! I should be at a fucking hospital in some wheeled bed with railings!! Not on some got damn floor!!"

Drake took a breath, trying to stay calm. "Listen to me, neither of us knew it would all go down like this. But it's going to be okay cuz we're gonna get through it."

"Stop feeding me bullshit." She cried. "You don't know that. Neither of us know that." Nicki broke eye contact with him and looked down at her belly. She slightly bit her top lip as she lifted her sweatshirt and slowly rubbed her stomach in circular motions. "I'm scared." She admitted, not looking up.

Drake placed his hand over one of hers. He spoke in a soothing voice. "Hey…… to be honest with you…… I'm scared too."

Nicki looked up at him.

"But I have faith. Don't question God's plans for us. Just trust Him."

"I… I have faith… it's just… we're not doctors, Drake. Neither one of us have ever been through this before. We… we don't know what to expect." Nicki shut her eyes, letting the tears fall.

Drake reached up, placing his free hand around the nape of her neck. He touched his forehead with hers and also closed his eyes. He then took in a breath, holding onto Nicki's hand as it rested against the side of her belly. "Dear Father…" He began, breathing out through his nose. "…I thank you for blessing us with this child and I ask that you please…" He continued on. Praying to God to watch over them all. Asking Him to keep them safe and let the delivery go smoothly. Thanking Him for all his blessings. He began to speed the prayer up once he heard a change in Nicki's breathing pattern.

"Drake…" She whispered.

"…Amen." He lifted his head and opened his eyes to see her clenching her teeth, face reddening.

"Take this off!" She shouted, tugging at the black sweatshirt. Her eyes were shut tight.

Drake moved fast. He removed her shirt as she began to hum.

"Breathe, baby. Breathe."

"AUBREY SHUT UP!!" She screamed, attempting to push again. She squeezed his hand so hard, the tips of his fingers were beginning to turn red. "HHHMMMMMMMMM!!!!"

In ready position, kneeling in front of Nicki, Drake looked down. "Baby I don't see anything happening, I'm gonna need you to push harder, okay?"

"I'M PUSHIIIIIINNNG!!!!" She screamed, her chin pointing down, knees up. "AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!"

Drake had never seen or heard her in so much pain. He felt helpless knowing there was nothing he could do to make it stop. He was trying his best to soothe her and keep her calm. After her contraction ended, he smoothed her hair back and kissed her forehead. "You're doin great, baby." He pulled back to look at her, her face wet with sweat. Drake wiped as much as he could of it away. "How long til the next one?"

"Two minutes…" She answered breathlessly.

"Okay. Do you need anything? Pillows or something?"

"Pillows…"

"Alright. I'll be right back." He rose quickly and dashed toward their bedroom. He grabbed two pillows from their bed and ran back to her. "Where do want'em?"

"My back…" Nicki leaned forward a little and Drake placed them both between her and the wall.

"Is that good?"

"Yea…" She sighed. "Thank you, Drake."

He glanced at her, still fixing her pillows. "No problem, babe."

"No… for everything. I don't know what I'd do without you. I love you so much."

"I love you too, Onika. I'll always be here for you. You and our baby mean everything to me. I already love him and he's not even here yet."

"Or her." Nicki added, with a smile.

Drake grinned. "Right. Or her. Son or daughter, I already love our baby."

Nicki let out a small giggle. "So do I." Her smile turned into a frown as she felt another contraction coming on. "Drake?" She called, breathing in and out. He quickly moved in front of her as she sat up a bit, furrowing her brow.

"You got it, Nic. Just keep breathing." He told her, looking into her eyes as they did the exercises in sync. "You're doin great."

Nicki followed his instruction as he continued to encourage her until the pain increased. "Drake please be quiet, don't talk to me right now."

"I'm only tryna help you, Nic. Can you push?"

"SHUT UUUUPP!!!!" She yelled as she began to push, holding onto her knees.

"Oh shit…" Drake muttered as he looked down. He made a disgusted face as the top of the baby's head began to peek. "Uh… keep pushin Nicki."

"Uuuggghhhh!!!!"

The baby's head surfaced a little more. Drake was in position, his hands ready to receive. "Come on baby, keep goin. I can already see the head."

Exhausted, Nicki stopped pushing to catch her breath. Drake reached over to rub her leg to comfort her. "You're doin just fine."

Nicki quickly smacked his hand away. "Don't touch me."

Surprised, Drake immediately held his hands up in surrender. "Sorry."

"Ooohhhhh!!!" Nicki started pushing again. For the next twenty minutes, she pushed on and off, stopping to catch her breath in between. Only the top of the baby's head was showing.

"Come on baby, push harder. The head's almost out."

Nicki took in a deep breath and pushed. More of the baby's head slowly started to emerge.

"Hey," Drake started to smile. "you're doin it. The baby's coming, Nic." She pushed once more and the childs head was completely out. "Oh my God…" Drake instinctively slipped his hands under the baby's slippery head to support it. "Onika the head is out, sweetie." He looked up at her sweating face with the goofiest grin. "Wanna feel it?"

Hand shaking, Nicki reached down to feel the top of her baby's head. "Oh my God…" She whispered breathlessly. "Oh my God…" She repeated, tears streaming down her cheeks.

"Yea, babe. I'm gonna need you to keep pushing, alright? Can you do that for me?"

Nicki nodded her head and continued to push. A few minutes later, Drake helped guide out the baby's shoulders. "You got it babe. Keep pushin."

"Uuuuuuhhhhh!!!! Aubrey, I ca— I can't!!!"

"YES! You can! Come on, baby. You got it. The baby's practically out."

Nicki pushed… and pushed… and pushed. Another twenty minutes went by before the newborns entire body slid into Drake's bare hands. He stared at it's little body for a moment then looked up at Nicki. "It's a boy, sweetheart." He said with a smile. The infant immediately started to cry.

Wide and teary eyed, Nicki reached for her son. Drake passed him off and watched his wife cradle their firstborn in her arms. "Ohh," she sniffled. "Hi sweetie… hi." She looked at Drake with a teary grin then back at their child. She kissed him on his forehead, marveling over his small body. "Ohh my God." She cried. "Drake, he's so tiny."

"Wow…" He smiled, still in shock that he delivered his own child. His son. He couldn't believe it. Remembering the doctor's orders, Drake helped Nicki deliver the afterbirth then reached for a towel. He dried their son off while Nicki held him, then wrapped the baby boy in a mint, green blanket. "Look at all that hair."

Nicki smiled. "I know right? It's so soft… and curly just like yours."

"Haha, yea… just like mine." Drake smiled, staring down at their son. "Can I?"

Nicki handed the boy to his father. Drake's face lit up. "Hey man. It's me, daddy." He glanced over at a yawning Nicki, her eyes glossy. "Ha, don't fall asleep on me, Nic. He just got here." He smiled then looked back down at the baby. "We still hafta name you don't we? Hey Nic, what should we call him?" He looked up at her, her face paling. "Nic?"

"Hm?" She answered, eyes half open.

"What's his name?"

"Whose?" She asked faintly, not looking at either of them. Her eyes roaming as she looked upward.

Drake furrowed his brow. "The baby, Onika…"

She half smiled. "The baby…"

Drake reached up to feel her forehead. "Sweetie?" He ran his hand down the side of her face, his diaphragm filling with worry. "Onika, sweetheart?" Nicki sighed and licked her lips. Drake looked down and noticed she'd lost a lot of blood. His heart began to beat fast. "Aw shit…" He quickly looked around him in search of the house phone. When he saw it, he reached for it and dialed 911.

"911. What's your emergency?"

"Yea, uh my wife. I, I just delivered my son and my wife, she's lost a lot of blood. Uhh, she she, um, she's kinda out of it right now and I really really really need an ambulance." He spoke frantically into the receiver.

"Ok, sir? Where are you?"

"Home! We're home. Uhh, 1116 Bornun Way. I called for one earlier and nobody has shown up. I don't know what the hell is goin on, but I NEED an ambulance."

"Alright, we're gonna get to you as fast as we can. Is the baby breathing?"

"Yes, he's fine. He's crying and everything. Um, the cord is still attached though."

"Attached to the placenta?"

"Yes."

"Okay, you need to cut that."

"With what?!"

"Sir, calm down please. I'll walk you through it. Do you have scissors or shears?"

"Scissors."

"Okay. Are they on you right now?"

"No. They're in the kitchen. I can't just leave him here."

"And you're not. You're gonna take him and the afterbirth with you."

"But what about my wife? I'm not just gonna leave her here."

"Sir, you're gonna have to. She's still breathing right?"

"Yea, she is."

"Ok, head into the kitchen now. Be careful."

"I'll be right back, honey." He kissed her forehead. "I love you." Drake quickly made his way to the kitchen. He found the scissors. "Now what?"

"I'm gonna need you to clamp the cord."

"Clamp it??"

"Ok. Forget it. We're gonna hafta improvise… Do you have shoelaces?"

"Um, yea?"

"Okay, take your shoelaces and tie them around the middle of the cord leaving about an inch between the laces."

Drake carefully placed his son on the kitchen table and removed his shoelaces. He then did what he was told. "Okay. I did that. What now?"

"Now when the cord stops pulsating, you're gonna cut in between the two shoelaces."

"Alright." Drake waited for the umbilical cord to stop beating. When it did, he cut it. "Okay, it's cut."

"Alright. Now leave the shoelace tied around the bit still connected to your baby. That's gonna fall off on its own."

"Okay." Drake placed the scissors down on the kitchen table and swaddled the baby. "What do I do with the placenta?"

"Do you wanna keep it?"

"Ew. No?"

"Ok well throw it away."

Drake double bagged the afterbirth and threw it away. He then made his way back to Nicki. "Onika?" He called.

Nicki looked around as if she were in a daze. She saw the baby in Drake's arms and just stared at it. He knelt down in front of her. "Hey, stay with me, okay? The ambulance is on the way." Nicki didn't respond. "Nicki?" He called, waving his hand in front of her face. Still no response. "What do I do about my wife? She's not responding to me."

"Is she still breathing?"

"Yes. She's still breathing."

"Okay, great. Keep her awake. Don't let her close her eyes."

"What happens if she does?"

"A result neither of us want…"

Drake's heart dropped into his stomach. This was all too real for him. The woman who he was going to spend the rest of his life with was now in danger of losing hers. He couldn't wrap his head around the idea that she'd be taken away from him and now their newborn son. "W- where's the ambulance?" Drake managed to get out.

"Almost there, sir."

"Alright…" Drake reached for a towel with his free hand. He wiped the sweat from her face then cleaned her up down below. He looked up at her and noticed her eyelids getting heavier. "Nic?" He called. "Baby stay with me, please. Please, please stay with me." Drake took the phone from between his ear and shoulder and set it down. He reached for Nicki's hand and kissed the back of it, holding on as he looked into her empty eyes. Her breathing became shallow as her lids began to close. "Onika, no. No, no, no, no, no. Come on baby. Wake up." Drake was now sweating profusely. Worry stamped all over his face. "Onika, baby, come on. Get up." He took his hand and rubbed the side of her face. "Wake up, honey. Please. The ambulance is almost here. I promise we're gonna get you two to the hospital and everything's gonna be okay. Just please stay awake." Nicki still didn't respond. "Oh my God… this isn't happening." Drake smoothed his hand over his hair. "This isn't happening." He repeated, tears stinging his eyes. "This is not happening. No…" He ran his hand over his face. "Onika, please??" He begged. Her chest stopped rising. Drake went cold all over as his body froze. "No…" He immediately placed his hand on her shoulder and began to shake her. "Nicki pleease?!" No response. "No… no…" Tears raced down his face. Drake grabbed the phone, the dispatcher was still there. "She's not breathing!!!! She just stopped breathing!!!!!"

"The ambulance should be there now, sir. Do you hear any sirens?"

Drake took the phone away from his ear. The sirens were blaring loud as fists knocked hard against the front door. He threw the phone on the floor and got up swiftly. He yanked the door open, baby still in his arms. "She's not breathing!" Drake said in a panic as paramedics rushed in. As quickly as they could, the medics lifted Nicki's limp body from the floor onto the bright, orange gurney. Drake watched with fear coursing through his body. "Is she gonna be okay???" He asked, his voice catching in his throat.

"I don't know, sir." One of the men answered. Another covered Nicki in a warm blanket as they rolled her out of the house. A third walked over to Drake. "We're gonna need to take the baby and make sure everything's okay."

Drake kissed his son's forehead before he passed him to the medic. "Don't let anything happen to them…… please……… they're everything to me…"

The medic nodded once and headed out of the house, leaving Drake standing in his front doorway, watching them load his wife and son into the back of an ambulance.

Chap. 1: The Chase

So… I can't have all these fics running at once… that means this will have to stay a 3-part One Shot for now. I plan to come back to it later though. & I only moved it cuz I figured it needed it's own blog. I'll update when I can, but it won't be anytime soon. & again, thank @XOSimmy, aka (@LoveWeezyF), for even getting me to start this thing. Love you guys! ♥

Chapter 1:

"Oh. My. God… I am the luckiest woman in the fucking world… Jus look at him… *bites lip* He is so damn sexy. Those arms are just… oh." Nicki thought as she watched Drake continue to do his chin ups. She eyed the muscles contracting in his back with each lift he made. Sweat trickled down the nape of his neck… his shoulders. Nicki stopped pedaling on the exercise bike to admire him. She untwisted the cap on her Dasani bottle and took a swig to cool herself off for more reasons than one. As she sat on the bike, Drake took a moment to himself. He stood in place for a second before turning around. When he faced Nicki, he wasn't surprised to find her staring him down. He licked his lips and gave her a wink. Nicki giggled as he walked over to her.

"Thirsty?" She asked.

"Just a little."

Nicki handed him her ice cold water bottle. Drake took a few sips before pouring it over his head.

"Drake??"

"What?" He handed her back the empty bottle. She looked inside as if something were left.

"Nothing." She shook her head and looked back up at him. A smile mischievously snuck across her face. "Come here."

Drake took a step toward her.

"Closer."

He took another step.

"Closer."

Drake smiled and stepped even closer.

"Bend down."

Drake leaned into her. Nicki quickly hit him upside his head with her Dasani bottle.

"Aye?!" He backed away.

"That was for wasting all my water." She laughed.

"I didn't waste it."

"Well you didn't drink it. That's wasting it, sir."

"I drunk some."

"Some. Point blank."

"Are you gettin smart wit me?" He raised an eyebrow.

"No."

"I think you gettin smart wit me."

"Haha, I'm not babe. Chill."

"Nah." Drake wrapped his arms around her, pulling her into an embrace.

"Ewww!!! Aubrey get off!!! You're all wet!! And sweaty!!! Stooop!!!" Nicki struggled to get out of his arms.

"But I love you." He hugged her tighter.

"Drake stop!" She laughed. "You're making me all wet! Let me go!"

He loosened his grip and Nicki pushed him off. "Jerk." She then took her towel from around her neck and wiped her face and arms.

"I'm sorry." He frowned. "Forgive me?"

"It depends."

"On?"

Nicki bit the edge of her bottom lip as she looked him over. "Lemme dry you off…"

"And then I'm forgiven?"

"Mhm." She nodded her head.

Drake walked over to her once more.

"Close your eyes." She told him. Drake did just that. Nic delicately began wiping the moisture from his face. She wiped from his forehead, to his temples. From his eyebrows to his cheeks. Nicki dried his nose and then his chin. He opened his eyes when she reached his neck. Drake watched her as she moved down to his chest. When she ran the towel over his right pec, he made his muscle jump.

"Ooo…" Nicki pulled her hand back and looked up at him as a smile graced his face.

"You like that, huh?" He asked, sure of himself.

Nicki giggled. Completely ignoring his question, she asked, "When'd you learn to do that, sexy?"

"Today actually. Was liftin weights earlier and it jus kinda flexed." He shrugged. "You like it tho." Drake took her hand and placed it over his pec. He then made it jump a couple times.

Nicki grinned like a Cheshire cat; dimples, teeth and all. "Aww, my baby learned new tricks."

Drake chuckled. "I know right? Aren't you proud of me?"

"I'm so proud of you, honey." She smiled, climbing off the exercise bike.

"Look what else I can do… Bam!" He struck a pose and began flexing the muscles in his arms.

"Okaaay, I see you." She grinned.

Drake struck another pose. "Pow! How you like me now?" He asked, striking yet another pose.

"Haha, stop it silly. You look amazing babe." Nicki reached her hand out to feel one of his biceps. "Ooo, you feel good too." She admitted, squeezing his muscles.

"My turn."

"Huh?"

Drake immediately pulled her into him by her waist. He moved his hands low and squeezed her ass. Nicki squealed and rose to her tiptoes. "My ass Aubrey???" She asked with a giggle.

"Yea. It's a muscle. And I saw you over there doin them squats earlier, lookin all professional and shit." He responded, continuing to feel on her booty.

Nicki blushed. "Shut up."

"Naw, I'm forreal. Them exercises damn sure get the job done... Lord have mercy on my soul." He closed his eyes and bit his bottom lip as if he were truly about to shed tears.

Nicki burst into laughter. "Aubrey shut uuup!! You are so stupid! Hahaha! Oh my God, I freakin love you! It's crazy how we've been married four years and you STILL manage to make me feel this good." She smiled.

"Almost like we're still dating right?"

"In a sense, yes." She removed her palms from both his biceps and wrapped her arms around his neck. "Gimme kiss."

"Meet me halfway."

Nicki puckered her lips and slightly craned her neck forward. Drake then connected with her lips. They pecked and pulled apart.

"One more?" Nicki asked.

Drake gave her another kiss.

"Haha, you're so cute." She smiled.

"You're cuter."

"Oh? So we're going there this morning, eh?"

"Haha, we can. But you know I'm gonna win."

"No you're not."

"Yes I am."

"Nuh uh."

"Yuh huh."

"Haha, ok fine. I get it. You win. Can I go shower now?"

"After me." Drake let her go and took her arms from around his neck. He ran out of their home gym and headed up the staircase.

"Hey??? You cheated!!" Nicki took off after him. This was routine. Not the chase, but the early morning work out session. Every morning before Dricki started their day, they'd wake up at 5am, eat breakfast and take a thirty minute jog around the track in their back yard with their dog, Catrina. They'd then head back inside and down into their basement to exercise on the equipment. Last, but not least, were the showers and anything after that would no longer be routine.

"Aubrey Graham! Don't you dare!" Nicki yelled after him.

Drake looked behind him and saw her catching up. He couldn't help himself from staring at the way her boobs bounced in her pink sports bra. Hypnotized, he hadn't noticed Nicki telling him to look out til the last minute.

"Baby, watch out!!" She yelled, stopping in her tracks.

Drake turned around, but it was too late. He tripped over a sleeping Catrina. "Whoa!"

Startled, the massive Rottweiler jumped up and started barking. Drake then rolled over onto his back. "Ow..." He hissed.

Nicki jogged over to him. "You ok?" She asked, hovering over him with her hands on her knees.

"Yea…"

"Good." She smiled, stepping over him.

"Aye?? Where you goin? Help me up please?"

"Nope." Nicki ran to their bedroom and shut the door.

Drake quickly got up and ran after her. The door was locked when he tried opening it. "Onika? Baby? Open the door please?"

"Nah homie." She replied while doing a little dance and getting her underclothes from their dresser drawer.

Drake jiggled the knob. "Come on bae!"

Nicki didn't respond.

"Nic?"

She walked over to the door. "If I let you in, you still hafta let me shower first."

"No."

Nicki sucked her teeth. "I guess I can't let you in then. Bummer." She motioned to leave the door until she heard him reply.

"How bout this…"

"I'm listening."

"How bout we shower together? We haven't done that in a long time."
Nicki took a moment to think. She cracked the door open and looked at him. "Me and you?"

"Mhm."

"Why not?" Nicki smiled and held the door open for him to come in. He kissed her on the cheek as he entered then headed to their dresser. Catrina casually strolled in behind him making Nicki shake her head. The dog jumped up on the bed, getting comfortable. "Nuh uh. Down girl." Nicki snapped her fingers and pointed to the floor. Catrina covered her eyes with her paws. "Catrina? Get. Down." Nicki walked over to her and patted her side. "Come on."

Drake looked over while searching for the match to one of his socks. "Catrina get down." The dog hopped off the bed and found a spot on the floor.

Nicki sucked her teeth. "I had it…"

Drake smirked and closed the drawer.

"Don't do that."

"My bad bae. It's jus kinda funny seein as how she's your dog, but she listens to me more."

"No. It's not." Nicki folded her arms and began to tear up.

"I apologize." He walked over to her and hugged her. "I'll keep my mouth shut next time. Sorry." Drake kissed her on the forehead and rubbed her back.

Nicki exhaled. "You stink."

Drake burst into laughter. "Gah lee. So blunt. Haha, come on. Let's go wash me up." He took her by the hand and led her into the bathroom. Drake closed the door behind them and Nicki let his hand loose to go start the shower. Drake took his socks and shoes off then his basketball shorts and briefs. When the temperature was set, Nicki too began to disrobe. They both removed their wedding bands and sat them on the sink next to each other. Nicki stepped into the shower first with Drake not too far behind. He then closed the glass door behind him.

"Whoa… is it me or did this shower get smaller?" Nicki asked.

"Nah, it's me. You know, wit all this muscle." He began to flex again.

"Haha, stop. You're getting too cocky and I DON'T like it." She poked him in the chest with her index finger.

"Stop lyin girl. You love it." He flexed his pec.

"Hahaha, shut up."

Drake smiled and stepped back into the stream of water. He closed his eyes and let it run over his head. He began to hum a random tune.

"Oh Lord…" Nicki rolled her eyes.

"Hey loove, hey loove, hey loove, hey, h- hey loove…"

"Aubrey? What are you—"

"Freestylin. Check it…" He moved his head out of the stream of water and opened his eyes to look at her. "A yo Nic, I kinda wanna tell you sum'n.

"And lets not forget, about them hips.

"Ahahahaha!!! Oh my God, babe. That was cute!" She grinned.

"Why thank you." He smiled. "I try."

"Haha, I loved it."

"Glad you did. Now it's your turn."

"What? Me?? Oh no Aubrey, I'll pass."

"Come on Nic? Do it for me?"

"Ok, fine. I'll do one."

"Need a beat?"

"No..." Nicki cleared her throat and thought for a second. "Ok, ok... I got it..." She took a deep breath. "Drizzy Drake.

"Ok…" Drake smiled, following along with her words.

"And I think I just might owe you a dashiki
So we should get it poppin over there in Waikiki

Drake applauded her. "Yours was way better than mine. No doubt."

"Haha, it was ok. I mean, it wasn't all that." She responded, pretending to be modest.

"Ha, you know babe, Waikiki sounds kinda far don'tcha think? I mean… we could get it poppin right here, right now forreal." He shrugged. "I'm jus sayin…"

"Right now?" She raised an eyebrow.

Drake pulled her in by her waist. "Mhm… so can I hit it in the mornin?" He kissed her lips.

"You can hit it in the mornin…" She kissed him back.

"Sun risin while you moanin?" He sang.

"Yea… sun risin while I'm moanin." She kissed his lips again. "I said you could hit it in the mornin." She sang.

"So I'ma hit it in the mornin." Drake kissed her, taking her bottom lip into his mouth. While they kissed, Nicki ran her hands down his torso. She gripped his flaccid member and began to stroke it. It stood at attention within seconds. No hesitation. Drake caressed her bottom as the water streamed down on them both. She wrapped her arms around his neck then he lifted her up with his hands under her thighs. Nicki wrapped her legs around his back as he moved them backward. Once her back touched the showers tiled wall, Drake carefully inserted himself inside her. Nicki faintly moaned and kissed him harder. He pushed further into her, gently stroking in and out.

"Ohh baby…" She breathed against his lips. "That feels… great." Nicki took her bottom lip into her mouth by her teeth. She leaned her head back against the wall, with closed eyes, while Drake kissed on her neck. He grinded into her a few more minutes before stopping.

"Turn around for me…" He whispered into her ear. Nicki looked at him, slowly placing her feet on the shower floor. She turned around and Drake backed up, giving her space to, "Bend over."

Nicki followed his order and slightly bent over. Drake grabbed her by the waist and entered her from behind.

"Aahhhmm, biiitch!"

"What?"

"Not you baby." She moaned. "Not you…"

Drake pumped into her as the water beat down on his back. He reached for the bun in her hair and removed her hair tie. Nicki's beautiful locks fell, partially hanging over her face. He ran his fingers through her hair, holding onto a handful and pulling it toward him. Nicki screamed in delight as he continued to thrust. She placed her hands flat against the tiled wall and pushed back, increasing the penetration. "Oohhh, fuuck! AUBREY?!" She yelled out as she furrowed her brow, tearing up. Catrina began barking viciously. She ran over to the bathroom door and repeatedly scratched at it.

"AYE?!" Drake yelled. "SHUT THAT SHIT UP!"

The dog kept at it.

"Baby?!?" Nicki moaned.

Catrina got louder.

Drake grabbed the bar of soap and pushed the shower door open. He then flung it at the bathroom door. Catrina growled then settled down.

"Aubrey I… I…"

"Hold on baby." He closed the shower door.

"I ca… I can't…"

Drake felt Nicki tightening around him so he sped up. He could tell she was on the verge of climax. Her thighs began to tremble and her mouth gaped open. He too began to feel a familiar sensation. She was ready for his finishing move. Drake stroked once… Nicki drew in a sharp gasp. Drake stroked twice… Nicki confessed, "I fuckin love you, Aubrey. I swear!" Third stroke and Drake deeply thrust into her with all he had. Nicki came all over his member and he released into her seconds later.

"Got damn…" He said to himself, pulling out after a moment or two.

After Nicki caught her breath, she stood up and turned to face him. "Got damn is right." She smiled, placing her arms around his neck.

Drake smiled back, pushing her hair out of her face.

"Haha, I'm surprised the water didn't go cold."

"Not yet anyway." Drake added.

"Well hurry, wash me up." Nicki took her washcloth from the towel rack and handed it to him. She then reached for the soap, which was no longer there. "What the?"

"Oh yea. I kinda… threw it… at the door…"

Nicki narrowed her eyes at him. "Mkaaay……" She looked behind her and reached for the shower gel. "Here."

After they cleansed themselves, they got dressed. Nicki felt a little sleepy so she laid down in their bed. Catrina was close by, laying on the floor near Nic's side of the bed. When Drake entered the room, Catrina lifted her head, watching his every move. She barked a little, causing Nicki to look down at her.

"What's wrong girl?" She asked. Catrina looked at her then back at Drake. The dog rose to her feet when he sat on the bed. He scooted up behind Nicki and Catrina lost it. She barked and barked as if Drake were some stranger.

"Hey babe? Move back a sec." Nicki said. Drake did so. Catrina's barking reduced to a snarl. "Now stand up." Drake got off the bed and stood up as they both watched the dog. Catrina sighed and laid down. Nicki looked at Drake and started to giggle. "Haha, it's you. She doesn't want you near me."

Drake shook his head. "Why must we go through this every time Catrina?" He sat back down on the bed. The dog sat up, growling. Drake stood again. "Ok, you win. I won't touch her."

Nicki burst into laughter causing Drake to side eye her. "Aw, I'm sorry baby. It's jus so funny to me." She continued to laugh.

"Yea, it's funny now… til you need me. Then what?"

"Haha, I'm done." Nicki sat up. "I'll show her out." Nicki stood up and walked over to the dog. "Come on girl, you've over stayed your welcome." She slipped her fingers under her collar and walked her out of their bedroom, shutting the door behind her. Drake laid down on the bed and Nicki cuddled up to him. "She's a trip." Nicki smiled.

"Yes indeed. Can't believe she still does that." He chuckled.

"I know right? Remember when she was just a puppy? She use'ta bite your pant leg. It was too cute."

"I'm glad she grew out of that cuz she's too big to be doin that now... Prolly drag my ass halfway down the street..."

"Hahaha, I knowww! She got so biiig! I remember jus yesterday I use'ta hold her on my chest and she'd jus drift to sleep. Almost like a baby."

Drake smiled. "Yea... like a baby..." He slipped his hand under Nicki's shirt, feeling over her baby bump. "Six more months…"

"Six months is a long time."

"It'll go by fast."

"I hope so." She smiled, turning her back to him. Drake enclosed the space between them, placing his arm around her waist. He softly rubbed her belly as she drifted to sleep.

Here's a liddle story behind the dog's name... Knowing that Drake's from Canada & Nic's from Trinidad, I decided to merge the names of the two countries. ^_^ Catrina.
